On 3 March 1942 — 84 years ago today — Flying Officer Man Mohan Singh, the first Sikh aviator and the first Indian to fly solo from England to India, drowned in Broome Harbour after a Japanese Zero attack destroyed all fifteen Allied flying boats. He was 35 and could not swim. He became the first Indian to die on Australian soil in the Second World War. In this deeply moving episode, Ranjodh Singh and Tarnpreet Singh from the Australian Sikh Heritage Association tell his full story — from Rawalpindi to Bristol, from Croydon to Karachi, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, to Broome.
