Why the King Is “Defender of the Faith” (And Why Charles Almost Changed It)

Why is Britain’s monarch called “Defender of the Faith”—and what does that title actually mean in the twenty-first century? This episode traces one of the oldest constitutional traditions of the British Crown, from King Henry VIII receiving the title from a Pope in 1521, through England’s break with Rome, to the Church of England’s unique place inside the British constitution. We explore why King Charles once suggested he preferred the phrase “Defender of Faith,” why that sparked decades of constitutional debate, how Queen Elizabeth II balanced Christian leadership with a multi-faith Britain, and why Charles ultimately took the traditional coronation oath unchanged in 2023. Along the way, we explain the monarch’s role as Supreme Governor of the Church of England, why Parliament—not the King—ultimately controls these constitutional arrangements, and how one ancient title continues to shape the modern monarchy.
