King Harald in “Extremely Serious” Condition as Norway’s Royal Family Gathers at Hospital- with Mark Francis

King Harald V of Norway is in an “extremely serious” condition at Oslo University Hospital, with Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit and other members of the Norwegian Royal Family gathering at his bedside. Crown Prince Haakon is serving as regent, while Norway’s prime minister has cancelled foreign travel as concern grows over the eighty-nine-year-old monarch.

We look at the latest on King Harald’s health, his fifty-eight-year marriage to Queen Sonja, his thirty-five-year reign, Haakon’s role as regent and what the eventual succession would mean for the Norwegian monarchy. We also examine the extraordinary challenges facing Crown Prince Haakon and Mette-Marit as Norway confronts the possibility of its first change of monarch since 1991.
