With the recent fires in Los Angeles capturing international headlines, with some estimates placing the property damage above that of Hurricane Katrina, America’s previous record holder for natural disasters, discussion is returning to the competency crisis in our elected officials and government services provided by the likes of FEMA, which have been slow to respond and ineffective to act over the past several years. In 2024, when Hurricane Helene slammed into parts of Appalachia leaving entire towns flooded and cut off, officials did little to mitigate the problem - to the point where in some cases government agents were actively obstructing private relief efforts.
