Jeffrey Ferguson had spent decades inside California courtrooms, first as a prosecutor and then as a Superior Court judge.

Then one night, his own home became a crime scene.

His wife, Sheryl, was shot during an argument. Their son said he watched his father aim and fire, but Jeffrey said something very different happened.

And one text message sent moments after the shooting would become central to the question jurors eventually had to answer:

Was this a horrific accident, or did a judge who knew exactly how firearms worked intentionally pull the trigger?
