HUMBLED- Zac Alley Calls WVU the “Worst Defense in College Football”

Zac Alley didn’t hold back. West Virginia’s defensive coordinator called his unit the “worst defense in college football” and delivered a blunt assessment of the approach: “It ain’t F***ING worked.” On this episode of Locked On West Virginia, Mountaineer Paul breaks down Alley’s response, his acknowledgment of coaching mistakes and player confusion, and his plan to significantly simplify WVU’s defense before facing Arizona. We connect Alley’s admissions to Rich Rodriguez’s demand for more specific coaching—and Jim Mora’s explanation of why clear instructions matter. From gap responsibilities and coverage breakdowns to a touchdown play WVU anticipated but still couldn’t stop, we examine exactly what needs to change. Alley says the Mountaineers have enough talent to perform better. Now comes the test: can clearer teaching and a smaller defensive package produce better football? Do you appreciate Alley’s honesty? What improvement do you need to see against Arizona? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
