HISTORICALLY BAD—WVU’s Defense Has Me DISGUSTED!/ Zac Alley UPDATE
I was already angry about WVU’s defense—but somehow, the numbers make the Arizona loss even worse. West Virginia ran 104 plays, rushed for 303 yards, gained 522 total yards and finished with 30 first downs. The Mountaineers ran more than twice as many plays as Arizona—and still lost by three touchdowns. According to the historical research presented after the game, no team in the tracked history of the sport had ever combined 100-plus plays, more than 300 rushing yards, only 11 completed passes and a loss by at least 21 points. Meanwhile, Arizona scored 52 points on only 51 offensive plays, averaged 13 yards per play in the second half and needed an average of just 68 seconds to complete its final five touchdown drives. This wasn’t merely another poor defensive performance. WVU’s defense is wasting historic production from Michael Hawkins Jr., Cam Cook and an offense performing well enough to win eight games. We’re breaking down every unbelievable number from one of the strangest—and most infuriating—losses in college football history.
