NIL's Impact on the 2025 NBA Draft: Prospects' Decisions and Future Implications

In this episode of the NBA Big Board Podcast, Rafael Barlowe and Leif Thulin dive into the significant impact of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals on the 2025 NBA Draft class. They discuss how several NBA prospects, such as Wake Forest’s Hunter Sallis and Kansas State’s Coleman Hawkins, opted to return to school, securing NIL deals in the $2 million range—amounts that surpass what many second-round and even some late first-round picks earn. Rafael explores how these lucrative short-term NIL deals have influenced the transfer portal and speculates on the potential long-term negative effects on players' draft statuses. In the final segment, Barlowe puts Thulin in the hot seat with a series of rapid-fire questions, asking his opinions on various prospects and their decisions to return to school, whether for NIL opportunities, to improve their draft stock, or both. Tune in for an insightful discussion on the evolving landscape of college basketball and its intersection with the NBA Draft.
