BREAKDOWN: How ISU Will WIN The Big 12 If All Goes Right, Jimmy Rogers With Chance In First Year

Iowa State enters the season with a genuine path to a Big 12 title, alongside clear flaws that could derail them. The primary case for a title run begins with a favorable conference draw that dodges several top-tier contenders. Defensively, the Cyclones project as a top unit capable of keeping them in every game. The addition of quarterbacks coach Keith Heckendorf—bringing quarterback Jaylen Raynor—adds proven passing prowess and dynamic playmaking to the room. If the ground attack excels to provide crucial balance, Iowa State’s offense could elevate from manageable to explosive. However, major questions threaten to slow them down. Building a complete, championship-caliber roster through a single transfer portal cycle is notoriously difficult, leaving depth concerns. On offense, the offensive line and wide receiver rooms lack proven diversity, which could leave the play-calling predictable against elite schemes. Scheduling nuances present further hurdles, featuring tricky short-week turnarounds—such as playing at BYU on a Friday and later visiting UCF on a short week—right after a tough stretch starting with Utah. Ultimately, a Big 12 Championship game appearance remains an uphill battle, but the upside is undeniable. Iowa State operates within a realistic range of a 9-win ceiling and a 4-win floor. Even if they fall short of a title, the opportunity to stack meaningful victories and build program momentum makes this a pivotal season.
