FUN: BYU Basketball Rolls Past Nebraska Cornhuskers as Collin Chandler & Jaxon Kohler DOMINATE Debut

BYU men's basketball deliver an early statement with a 72-61 exhibition victory over Nebraska, sparking excitement about a potential breakout season under Kevin Young. Facing a veteran Cornhuskers squad led by Fred Hoiberg, BYU shook off a slow first half to surge past their Big Ten foes through sheer depth, unselfish ball movement, and a perimeter-oriented attack. Collin Chandler shines with 19 points, aggressive defense, and a trio of steals, while freshman Bruce Branch III impresses in his debut, bouncing back from a shaky start to finish with 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Rob Wright’s steady presence and Jaxon Kohler’s double-double debut give BYU fans reason to believe this team has the right mix of experience and young talent. Jake Hatch analyzes how BYU’s identity is shifting on both ends of the floor. With rim protector Kebba Keita departed, the Cougars attack the perimeter with newfound intensity—fighting through screens, staying disciplined, and emphasizing individual accountability on defense, as reinforced by Colin Chandler and Coach Young in postgame comments. Offensively, BYU doubles down on pace and spacing: every player, from Wright to Kohler, shows green-light confidence from beyond the arc. The result? Over half of their field goal attempts come from three-point range, signaling a bold strategic shift that could catch Big 12 opponents off guard. The episode also delivers key roster updates: Dawson Baker is "ahead of schedule" in injury recovery, while Brody Kozlowski may return as soon as the next exhibition at UNLV. Young’s postgame remarks reinforce the program’s commitment to defense and team-first basketball. As Hatch previews the upcoming football and basketball coverage, the big question looms—does this new, cohesive BYU squad have what it takes to contend in their Big 12 debut campaign?
