BYU, Arizona State, and Colorado bring unique competitiveness to college football, each with distinct histories and characteristics that make them valuable and intriguing programs in the Big 12. BYU: Tradition of Excellence BYU has long been a consistent competitor in college football, with a rich tradition that includes a national championship in 1984 and a Heisman Trophy winner in Ty Detmer. The Cougars are known for their disciplined style of play, often featuring high-caliber quarterbacks and a physical approach in the trenches. As a new Big 12 member, BYU’s competitiveness stems from its national fanbase, storied history, and ability to win against top programs. The Cougars have shown they can rise to challenges, with multiple victories against ranked opponents as an independent program, making them a force to watch in their new conference home. Arizona State: A Sleeping Giant Arizona State has always had the potential to be a powerhouse, with its location in the talent-rich Phoenix metropolitan area and a tradition of producing NFL-caliber players. The Sun Devils have had their share of ups and downs, but their competitiveness is evident in their ability to rise in key moments. With a mix of youth and experience on their roster, they have the tools to upset Big 12 powerhouses. Arizona State’s willingness to invest in coaching and facilities demonstrates their commitment to becoming a consistent contender. Colorado: Reinvigorated by Deion Sanders Colorado’s competitiveness has been redefined under Deion Sanders. With his bold leadership and ability to attract top talent, Sanders has turned the Buffaloes into a rising force. Colorado’s strong start in 2023 signaled their potential, and their ability to compete with top programs makes them a threat in the Big 12. Sanders’ emphasis on culture, energy, and recruiting has transformed the program, ensuring they won’t be overlooked. Together, BYU, Arizona State, and Colorado add depth and excitement to the Big 12, enhancing the conference’s competitive edge.
