Analytics Predict BYU Will BLOW OUT Utah in Holy War: Big 12's Top 10 Team Soars Further

BYU holds a unique place in college football history, with a tradition of offensive innovation, national recognition, and a legacy of star quarterbacks that set the program apart and has often given it an edge in historical comparisons to rival Utah. One of the defining elements of BYU’s all-time success has been its consistent emphasis on a high-powered passing offense, dating back to the era of legendary head coach LaVell Edwards. Under Edwards, BYU became known for pioneering an aerial attack that produced prolific offenses and revolutionized how passing was used in college football. This approach helped BYU gain national prominence, winning games in style and setting records that brought widespread recognition to the program. The peak of BYU’s historical success came in 1984 when the Cougars won the national championship—the only team in the state of Utah to claim that title. This achievement cemented BYU’s place in college football lore and has remained a point of pride for the program and its fans. That national championship season also marked BYU as a true power outside the traditional conferences, and it remains one of the most significant accomplishments in the history of college football. BYU’s tradition of developing elite quarterbacks is another factor that sets it apart historically. The program has produced NFL talents like Steve Young, Jim McMahon, and Ty Detmer, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1990. This quarterback legacy has contributed to BYU’s reputation as a breeding ground for top-level talent and helped sustain the program's competitiveness over the years. While Utah has experienced a strong rise under Kyle Whittingham, including Pac-12 titles and consecutive Rose Bowl appearances, BYU's historical achievements in national prominence, offensive innovation, and the quarterback lineage give it a storied edge in the rivalry. Though both programs continue to grow and compete intensely, BYU's historical milestones and unique contributions to college football make its legacy stand out in the all-time comparison.
