WASPI Women Challenge UK Government in High Court
WASPI Women Challenge UK Government in High Court: A Legal Battle for Pension CompensationIn this episode, we delve into a significant legal dispute unfolding in the UK. Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) are taking their case to the High Court in December, challenging the governments decision not to compensate them for the increase in their state pension age.The WASPI campaign represents women born in the 1950s, whose state pension age was raised from 60 to 65, and later to 66, without what they claim was sufficient notice. The group argues that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) failed to adequately inform them of these changes, disrupting their retirement plans.Earlier this year, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman found significant errors on the part of the DWP, concluding that they should have sent out letters to these women much earlier. The WASPI group believes the government should pay these women between £1,000 and £2,950.Despite the Ombudsmans findings, the DWP stated last year that there would be no compensation. However, Angela Madden, the chair of the WASPI campaign, believes the DWP cannot use the same reasons for denial again if their previous reasons are deemed unlawful. The DWP has accepted the Ombudsmans finding of maladministration and apologized for a twenty-eight-month delay in writing to the affected women. However, they disagree with the Ombudsmans approach to injustice and remedy, setting the stage for this upcoming High Court showdown. DNN | The Daily News Now!
