BEL & THE DRAGON: The Lost Daniel Story They Took Out of Your Bible

Did Daniel actually kill a dragon? And why isn't this story in most modern Bibles?

In Episode 54 of the Ancient Roots of Life Podcast, JT and Josh dive into Bel and the Dragon, the fascinating addition to Daniel preserved in the Septuagint tradition. Daniel exposes the priests of Bel, destroys their idol, kills a creature the Babylonians worship as a god, and then finds himself thrown into a lions' den — again.

From there, we tackle one of the biggest debates in Christianity: What actually changed under the New Covenant? We examine Jeremiah's prophecy, Acts 15, Paul's writings, the Ten Commandments, Sabbath observance, Torah, and what it means for God's law to be written on the heart.

Finally, we finish our journey through the Gospel of Nicodemus / Acts of Pilate, including its extraordinary traditions surrounding Christ, Hades, the resurrection, and Pilate's reported testimony concerning Jesus. This one goes all over the ancient world — Babylon, Daniel, dragons, Torah, the New Covenant, Hades, Pilate and the resurrection.

What do you think: Is Bel and the Dragon preserving a genuine ancient tradition about Daniel? And what should we study next?

The New Covenant discussion begins from Jeremiah's prophecy that God would establish a covenant “not according to” the covenant made at the Exodus and would put his laws into the people's minds and hearts. ancient-roots-of-life-54 The conversation then moves into Acts 15 and the dispute over whether Gentile believers had to be circumcised and keep the Law of Moses.
