Prince Andrew AKA The Sweaty Nonce (10/24/25)
During his infamous 2019 BBC Newsnight interview, Prince Andrew stunned viewers by claiming that he could not sweat — a statement meant to refute Virginia Giuffre’s description of him “sweating profusely” while dancing with her at London’s Tramp nightclub in 2001. Andrew told interviewer Emily Maitlis that he had “a peculiar medical condition” resulting from “an overdose of adrenaline during the Falklands War,” which allegedly left him temporarily unable to perspire. He presented this explanation as a factual rebuttal to Giuffre’s memory of their encounter, implying her story was physically impossible. The comment instantly became one of the most ridiculed lines in royal history, spawning memes, headlines, and renewed public scrutiny over his credibility. Medical professionals and commentators swiftly dismissed the claim as implausible. The Science Media Centre in the UK gathered responses from dermatologists who noted that while anhidrosis (the inability to sweat) is a legitimate medical condition, linking it to a decades-old combat event was medically baseless. Giuffre’s legal team later demanded that Andrew provide evidence of this alleged condition during discovery in her U.S. civil lawsuit, arguing that the statement was not only “absurd” but also emblematic of his evasive defense strategy. The sweating claim came to symbolize the overall absurdity of Andrew’s BBC appearance — a disastrous attempt at damage control that instead torpedoed his public standing and forced him to withdraw from royal duties. to contact me: [email protected]
