The Black Heart - Newfoundland's Forbidden Books

The Black Heart: Newfoundland's Forbidden Books

For generations, communities throughout Newfoundland whispered about mysterious books believed to contain forbidden knowledge and supernatural power.

Known as the Black Heart, these books were said to summon demonic imps, cast curses, conjure impossible visions, and grant extraordinary abilities. But possessing one allegedly came with a terrible price—and getting rid of it might be impossible.

This week, Holosky explores the disturbing folklore documented by researcher Barbara Rieti, including strange encounters, books that refused to burn, and the chilling account of a man who supposedly purchased one for his soul and a penny.

Were these books powerful grimoires, misunderstood works of stage magic, or something far more sinister?
