Kouri Richins Filed WHAT While Sheriffs Faced Scrutiny?!
Kouri Richins made a new move in her fight for another trial, and prosecutors questioned the reason she gave. Her attorneys submitted a sealed request to pause the case while investigators examined possible interference surrounding the original murder prosecution. That separate investigation has led to charges against Wasatch County Sheriff Jared Rigby and former Summit County Sheriff Dave Edmunds. Both deny wrongdoing and have pleaded not guilty. In March, jurors convicted Richins of aggravated murder, attempted murder, insurance fraud and forgery. Eric Richins died in March 2022 after drinking a fentanyl-laced cocktail. A judge sentenced Kouri to life without parole on what would have been Ericâs 44th birthday. The defense sought a new trial, arguing among other things that Judge Richard Mrazik had shown bias. Another judge refused to disqualify him. Prosecutor Brad Bloodworth later argued the sealed request raised a different complaint about a closed pretrial hearing rather than the conduct before jurors that the defense had initially attacked. He called the requestâs stated basis a misleading pretext. The obstruction investigation involves allegations circulated about Detective Eric Mainord, who helped investigate Ericâs death. An anonymous letter reached prosecutors before trial. Reporting on search warrant materials describes concerns that the allegations were deployed in a sheriffâs election dispute and could interfere with the Richins case. Rigby and Edmunds now face felony obstruction charges, but the full allegations in their indictments have not been made public. The request for a pause did not remain active. The court rejected a stay, and the defense withdrew its request.
