Lindsay Clancy: What Mothers Are Too Afraid to Admit After the Mistrial

The Clancy mistrial declared September 4 left the legal question open. But the question that actually landed hardest has nothing to do with a retrial.

Postpartum psychosis affects roughly one to two in every thousand births. The medical community classifies it as a psychiatric emergency. Lindsay Clancy's defense team argued she was experiencing it when she killed Cora, Dawson, and Callan. The prosecution argued she acted deliberately. Twelve jurors who heard all of it couldn't agree.

Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott examines why the Lindsay Clancy case triggers a fear response that has nothing to do with taking sides. Why the concept of a mother's brain being hijacked by biology threatens something foundational about how people understand maternal instinct and personal control. What the word "monster" does psychologically — and who it's actually protecting.

Scott also addresses mothers listening right now who have experienced intrusive thoughts they've never disclosed. When the public response to this case turns honesty into a threat, she explains what happens next to the women watching in silence.

The trial was about Lindsay Clancy's mental state. This conversation is about yours.
