På kvällen den 16 mars 1792 träffas Sveriges konung Gustav III av ett skott i ryggen. Mannen som håller i pistolen är Jacob Johan Anckarström, men han är långtifrån ensam. Vid hans sida finns en hel sammansvärjning av adelsmän som under flera år känt ett växande missnöje med kungens politik.
