How Can I Be Bold When I'm Afraid? (Acts 4:1-13) | Daily Devotional & Bible Study

Courage does not mean we never feel fear. It means we know where to turn when fear shows up. In this contemplative prayer episode we reflect on Peter and John in Acts 4, whose boldness came from being with Jesus, and we ask the Holy Spirit for that same courage. "Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus." (Acts 4:13) Questions this episode answers Why were Peter and John so bold in Acts 4? Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit when he spoke (Acts 4:8). The leaders noticed that these ordinary men had been with Jesus. Their courage came from His presence and power, not their own education or status. What is the difference between confidence and courage in Christ? Confidence often rests on our own skills or personality. Courage in Christ rests on God's presence, even when we feel weak or afraid. It is something the Holy Spirit gives as we stay close to Jesus. How can I get spiritual boldness? The early church prayed for boldness, and God answered by filling them with the Spirit (Acts 4:29-31). Spend time with Jesus in prayer and His Word. Boldness grows out of knowing Him.
