We have all had times when we have messed up. Sin separates us from God and has real consequences, but God longs to restore us and create in us a clean heart. Today we look at how David came to God in his brokenness in Psalm 51 and how God invites us to come to Him with our sin. "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." (Psalm 51:10) Questions this episode answers What is the background of Psalm 51? The heading says David wrote it after the prophet Nathan confronted him about his sin with Bathsheba. David had committed adultery and arranged for her husband's death. Psalm 51 is his honest prayer of repentance. What does 'create in me a clean heart' mean? David knew he could not fix his own heart, so he asked God to make it new. The Hebrew word for create is the same word used in Genesis 1, pointing to something only God can do. It is a prayer for inner change, not just forgiveness. Will God forgive me if I repent? Yes. Psalm 51:17 says God will not despise a broken and contrite heart. 1 John 1:9 promises that if we confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive us and cleanse us.
