Today we look at Psalm 50 and what happens when spiritual routines take the place of a real relationship with God. It's easy to settle into habits and quietly stop pursuing Him. This Psalm shows us what God really wants from His people. "The Mighty One, God, the LORD, has spoken, And summoned the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting." (Psalm 50:1) Questions this episode answers What is Psalm 50 about? Psalm 50 pictures God calling His people to account like a judge in a courtroom. He makes clear that He doesn't need their sacrifices; He wants thankful hearts and honest lives. It warns against religion without relationship. Does God care more about rituals or relationship? God gave His people practices of worship, but He always wanted their hearts. In Psalm 50:14 He asks for a sacrifice of thanksgiving. Our habits of faith are good when they draw us closer to Him, not when they replace Him. How do I know if my faith has become a routine? One sign is going through the motions without expecting to meet God. Another is saying the right words while ignoring what He asks of us, which Psalm 50:16-17 warns about. The good news is that He invites us to call on Him and return (Psalm 50:15).
