Was Abraham a Hero? Why the Bible Shows His Lies (Genesis 12:10-20) | Daily Devotional & Bible Study

Today we look at why the people in the Bible were never meant to be our heroes. Abraham handed Sarah over to Pharaoh to protect himself, and then did it again, yet God stepped in to protect His own promise. Seeing why God left this story in Scripture changes how we read every Bible character after it. "But the LORD struck Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife." (Genesis 12:17) Questions this episode answers Why did Abraham lie about Sarah being his sister? Abraham feared the Egyptians would kill him to take Sarah, so he told her to say she was his sister. He was protecting himself, and he gained livestock and servants from it. God stepped in and struck Pharaoh's household until Sarah was released. Why does the Bible show the flaws of its heroes? The Bible was never meant to hand us role models. Abraham repeats the same lie in Genesis 20, and Isaac does it in Genesis 26. The point is that God's promise never depended on their character, which gives hope to flawed people like us. What does Hebrews 11 mean if Abraham wasn't perfect? Hebrews 11 honors specific moments when Abraham trusted God, not his whole life. It skips the Egypt story completely. The chapter points to God's faithfulness to ordinary, flawed people.
