What Happened at the Last Supper and in Gethsemane? (Matthew 26) | Daily Devotional & Bible Study

Today we walk through Thursday of Holy Week, from the Last Supper to the Garden of Gethsemane and the betrayal of Jesus. These moments show us the heart of Jesus on the night before the cross. They also help us see why His sacrifice still matters for our faith today. "While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, 'Take, eat; this is My body.'" (Matthew 26:26) Questions this episode answers What happened on Thursday of Holy Week? Jesus shared the Passover meal with His disciples and gave them the bread and the cup as signs of His body and blood. Afterward He went to Gethsemane to pray, and there Judas betrayed Him with a kiss. Many churches call this day Maundy Thursday. Why did Jesus pray in Gethsemane? Jesus knew the suffering ahead and poured out His heart to the Father. He asked if the cup could pass from Him, yet He surrendered, saying, 'Not as I will, but as You will.' His prayer shows us how to bring our anguish to God and still trust Him. What does the Last Supper mean for Christians today? Jesus gave His followers the Lord's Supper so we would remember His sacrifice. When we take communion, we look back to the cross and forward to His return. It reminds us that we belong to Him through the new covenant in His blood.
