Bowen家族治療學者認為，
個人過去在原生家庭中與父母的關係模式，
將持續影響其未來的重要人際關係，
且人們傾向於在親密關係中複製早期在原生家庭中建立的關係模式，
而當中「自我分化」概念的影響尤為深遠，
其中自我分化較佳者，
在家庭關係中較能投入情感、享受親密又不至於失去自主性；
自我分化較差者與家庭的關係不是太黏膩，就是太疏離，
因此可知個人與原生家庭分化的程度會影響本身的家庭關係，
當然也會對於之後的愛情、婚姻、親子關係的影響甚鉅。
