truth freeing the slaves

The truth about freeing the enslaved in the United States is that emancipation was driven primarily by the mass resistance and self-liberation of enslaved Black people themselves, which President Abraham Lincoln and the Union military then formalized through policy and war.

The Reality of Emancipation

• Self-Liberation: Long before official government decrees, enslaved people fought for their own freedom by escaping to Union lines, slowing down work, and staging a "general strike" against the plantation economy as noted by historian W.E.B. Du Bois.
• Military Necessity: President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, framing it as a vital war measure to cripple the Confederacy rather than an immediate moral rescue for every enslaved person.
• Legal Limitations: The 1863 Proclamation only applied to states in rebellion; it legally left slavery intact in loyal border states, meaning full nationwide abolition required the ultimate victory of Union armies and the ratification of the 13th Amendment in 1865.
• Complex Legacy: As discussed in various historical analyses on platforms like Reddit AskHistory, individual slaveholder manumissions and government efforts varied wildly, and true freedom was immediately met with the severe backlash of Black Codes and Jim Crow segregation
