PotLuck Saturday: The Rise and Fall of the Variety Show

Happy Pot Luck Saturday! Al Capone, Ed Sullivan, fake Jan Brady, a Lawrence Welk crush, and the days when just about everybody seemed to have a television variety show. We talk Milton Berle becoming Mr. Television, six-year-old Rose Marie getting a gold ring from Al Capone, Ed Sullivan surviving decades of changing television, and some of the legendary performers who found their way onto his stage. We also talk The Carol Burnett Show, Tim Conway breaking Harvey Korman, Laugh-In, Sonny & Cher, Donny & Marie, Captain & Tennille, and the Brady Bunch Variety Hour. Plus, Vicki Lawrence’s surprising career beyond Carol Burnett, the Hudson Brothers as the poor man’s Three Dog Night, and the bizarre television experiment known as Pink Lady. It’s a Pot Luck Saturday with forgotten TV shows, one-season wonders, Kev on the Scene Classics, stars who knew when it was time to walk away, stars who didn’t, and a plea to keep Pot Luck Saturday from going on hiatus. We’ll Talk Shawtly!
