PotLuck Saturday: Columbia House- How Did 12 Albums for a Penny Actually Work

Happy Pot Luck Saturday! Twelve albums for a penny, jazz fusion, fake apartment numbers, and 22,000 CDs. Yes, we’re finally talking about Columbia House. We talked about the Columbia Record and Tape Club, the little cards tucked inside magazines, waiting for that cardboard box to arrive, and the fine print that turned one innocent penny into- well- a lot more. We talk about the albums you actually wanted, the ones you definitely didn’t, and the teenagers who discovered there were ways around the system. We talk about Hootie & the Blowfish, Better Than Ezra, the documentary The Target Shoots First, and David Russo — the New Jersey guy who used 1,630 aliases and 12 mailboxes to get more than 22,000 CDs before the Postal Inspectors finally caught up with him. It’s a Pot Luck Saturday with mail-order music, teenage schemes, forgotten CDs, Lester Wunderman, the Advertising Hall of Fame, and the days when getting a box of records in the mail felt like an event. We’ll Talk Shawtly!
