1356. How to Reverse Bunions + Maria Reveals What Dancing With the Stars Did to Her Feet w/ Dr. Emily Splichal

Hey Heal Squad Dr. Emily Splichal is back for Part 2, and this time things get VERY personal. Maria reveals for the first time what happened to her feet while competing on Dancing With the Stars (including dancing through seven stress fractures!) and Dr. Emily takes a closer look at Maria’s own feet and discovers something she never knew! Dr. Emily also tackles some of the biggest questions about everyday foot health: Does more cushioning actually mean a better shoe? Can wearing too much support make our feet weaker? Who really needs orthotics? And what exactly is plantar fasciitis? She explains why knowing your individual foot type matters and what may actually be happening when that plantar fascia starts causing pain. Then Maria brings Dad into the conversation for an impromptu foot consultation. Dr. Emily breaks down what may be behind his pain and numbness, explains neuromas and shares practical strategies to discuss with a clinician, from foot release and toe spacers to metatarsal pads. And finally: BUNIONS. I know we’ve all been waiting for it! Can you actually reverse one without surgery? Dr. Emily gives the answer and explains what it means to “push pause” on a bunion before it progresses.

HEALERS & HEAL LINERS

  • More cushion doesn't automatically mean more comfort: Dr. Emily explains why heavily cushioned and supportive shoes aren't automatically better for every foot and why understanding your individual foot type matters.

  • Know your feet before you try to “fix” them: Flat feet, overpronation, plantar fasciitis and orthotics aren't one-size-fits-all. Dr. Emily explains why properly assessing how your own foot moves is an important first step.

  • You may not be able to reverse a bunion, but you may be able to “push pause.”: Dr. Emily says structural bunion correction requires surgery, but strengthening the feet, creating more room for the toes and using tools like toe spacers may help protect function and slow progression.
