Harper's Young People is an illustrated weekly publication for children that includes short stories, tales from history, natural history, poetry, puzzles, and other fun. This 40th issue of the serial was published on August 3rd, 1880. In this issue, "The Moral Pirates" enter the Erie Canal and carefully pass the Whitewing through and trudge it around the canal's many locks; two American settler children are taken by Canadian Indians and live with them through one winter before they attempt a dangerous escape in the third part of "Old Times in the Colonies"; and a boy visits Colorado's Rocky Mountains, decides to become a prospector, and purchases his own "silver" mine for ten dollars in "Tom Chester's Silver Mine".
