The Real Story Behind Wayward: My Time Inside the School That Inspired a Netflix Nightmare

Everyone’s talking about Netflix’s new series Wayward — but for me, it’s not just entertainment. It’s my life story. In this deeply personal episode, I break down what’s real and what’s made for TV in the hit series — because I actually lived it. Long before Wayward became a pop culture obsession, I attended CEDU, the original “therapeutic boarding school” that inspired this world. I graduated from its first campus, endured its methods, and witnessed firsthand how a program built on healing was actually rooted in Synanon, a 1960s cult known for psychological control and emotional abuse.Watching Wayward sent me into full-blown PTSD — not because it’s fiction, but because it’s frighteningly accurate. If you’ve been bingeing the series and find yourself wondering how much of it could really happen… this episode is for you.💡 In this episode, you’ll hear: • What was real in Wayward — and what was dramatized for TV • The shocking history of CEDU, the program that inspired an entire industry of “troubled teen” schools • How the Synanon cult shaped the foundation of emotional-growth education • The disturbing practices that students endured in the name of therapy • The lasting trauma — and what healing looks like when you finally tell the truth--- --- ---PLEASE LIKE, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE, AND GIVE US A 5-STAR REVIEW!: ratethispodcast.com/missunderstood Become a Patreon Member: https://www.patreon.com/c/MissUnderstoodwithRachelUchitelShop Miss Understood Merch https://missumerch.com/Follow Rachel on Instagram! https://www.instagram.com/racheluchitelnyc/?hl=enFollow Rachel on TikTok! https://www.tiktok.com/@itsracheluchitelExecutive Producer: George Carmona
