Tanzania Releases Opposition Leaders Amid Election Crisis
On November eleventh, four senior opposition leaders in Tanzania were released after being arrested for their alleged involvement in deadly protests following last months general election. The opposition party, CHADEMA, claims over one thousand people were killed by security forces, while the government denies these numbers. Among those released were CHADEMA Vice Chairman John Heche and deputy secretary-general Amani Golugwa. Prosecutors charged at least one hundred and forty-five people with treason, and more than one hundred and seventy others with protest-related offenses. The exclusion of CHADEMA leader Tundu Lissu from the presidential ballot triggered these demonstrations. President Hassans government has been accused of suppressing dissent and carrying out abductions of critics. The African Union noted the election did not meet democratic standards. President Hassan has rejected criticism of her human rights record and defended the fairness of the election, but no findings from an investigation into reported abductions have been publicly unveiled.
