Remoras Surf Whales, Annoying or Beneficial?
Scientists in Australia captured rare footage of remora fish, or sucker fish, performing high-speed whale surfing alongside humpback whales. These fish, which typically cling to whales, were seen peeling away just before a whale breached the surface, only to return with remarkable precision moments later. The footage, captured by suction-cup cameras attached to humpbacks, reveals the fishs quick response to the whales movements and their ability to travel vast distances across the ocean. However, the footage also suggests that the whales might find their hangers-on annoying, as some whales with high numbers of remoras were continually breaching, seemingly trying to dislodge the fish. The ultimate fate of these remoras when their whale hosts depart remains a mystery. The Daily News Now! — Every city. Every story. AI-powered. Hosted on Acast.
