Aditya-L One: Preparing for Sun's Peak Activity
Aditya-L One, Indias first solar observatory, is set to witness the Suns peak activity cycle in 2026, a period marked by intense solar storms and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). These massive bubbles of charged particles can travel at speeds of up to three thousand kilometers per second, potentially threatening near-Earth space where thousands of satellites, including many from India, are stationed. Aditya-L One, with its unique coronagraph, offers a continuous view of the faint outer corona, enabling scientists to study eruptions and measure a CMEs temperature and energy, crucial for predicting its strength if it heads toward Earth. Collaborating with NASA, the Indian Institute of Astrophysics studied a significant CME recorded by Aditya-L One in 2024, gaining insights to protect satellites and understand near-Earth space better.
