En: Winter in Seoul was cold.
En: However, the inside of the house was warm because the whole family was preparing for Seollal, the Lunar New Year.
En: Laughter filled the large family home.
En: From the kitchen came the smell of delicious food.
En: tteokguk, galbijjim, and japchae were being prepared.
En: That day, Jun discovered something strange in the living room.
En: A familiar family portrait hung on the wall.
En: Jun tilted his head in puzzlement.
En: The painting was vintage and blackened with age.
En: The outlines were clear, but Jun could not recognize the faces.
En: "When did this painting appear here?" Jun asked himself in a small voice.
En: But the family considered it an ordinary occurrence.
En: "It's probably been tucked away in a drawer for a long time," his grandfather said with a smile.
En: However, Jun's curiosity persisted.
En: Why did this portrait appear at this time?
En: He expressed to his family his desire to learn more about the painting.
En: Everyone laughed it off amidst their busy schedules.
En: However, Jun did not give up.
En: He was someone who loved family history, and this mystery intrigued him even more.
En: The first clue came from the back of the painting.
En: There was a small envelope hidden beneath some roughly attached adhesive tape.
En: Jun carefully peeled it off.
En: Inside was an old letter.
En: The writing on the wrinkled paper was brief, but it contained a hidden story of the family.
En: "To my descendants," the letter began.
En: It told a story of a grandmother who had sacrificed herself long ago to protect the family.
En: Her courageous decision laid the foundation for the family, and the descendants had continued to benefit from her grace.
En: It was Seollal.
En: As the family gathered to eat tteokguk, Jun mustered up the courage to speak to them.
En: He showed them the portrait and the letter and shared the grandmother's story.
En: Everyone listened attentively.
En: Tears of emotion flowed, and the family's hearts united as one.
