Story Transcript:
Nl: De lucht was fris en helder in de Keukenhof-tuinen.
En: The air was fresh and clear in the Keukenhof gardens.
En: Autumn had made its entrance, and the flowers were a carpet of gold and rust.
En: Sander stood still at the entrance with Femke and Maarten by his side.
En: This was their annual trip, a tradition he didn't want to break.
En: Since their mother had passed away, everything seemed different, but this tradition felt important.
En: Femke poked at the gravel with her foot.
Nl: Ze wilde hier niet zijn.
En: She didn't want to be here.
En: To her, it felt as if something was missing, as if their mother's spirit wasn't here this time.
En: "Dad, why do we still have to do this?"
En: she asked softly, while looking at the ground.
Nl: Sander slikte.
En: "Because mom found this important," he replied.
En: "And I think she always felt happy here."
En: Maarten walked ahead, always seeking an adventure.
En: He turned around and shouted, "Come on, I can already see the flowers!
Nl: Ze zijn zo mooi!"
En: They're so beautiful!"
En: He didn't fully grasp the heaviness, but his enthusiasm was infectious.
En: The day went by quietly, but Sander felt the silence between himself and Femke.
En: When they reached their favorite bed of tulips, he felt a wave of sorrow wash over him.
En: He had avoided this place all day, hoping for some time alone to sort out his thoughts.
En: His tears came unconsciously, and he turned away, hoping the children wouldn't see.
Nl: Femke stond echter al naast hem.
En: Femke was already beside him, though.
En: "Dad, it's okay to be sad," she said.
Nl: Haar stem was zacht, maar sterk.
En: Her voice was soft but strong.
Nl: "Misschien kunnen we iets nieuws doen.
En: "Maybe we can do something new.
En: Something that makes all three of us happy.
Nl: Iets voor mama."
