Trump's Deportations Blocked, Alien Enemies Act Investigated

Supreme Court Blocks Trumps Deportations Under Alien Enemies Act; Judge Boasberg Investigates Potential ViolationsThe Supreme Court has halted former President Donald Trumps deportations under the Alien Enemies Act, an 18th-century law. This decision came after a federal judge, James Boasberg, initiated an inquiry into whether Trump administration officials disregarded a court order by deporting hundreds of men to El Salvador earlier this year. Boasberg aims to expedite the investigation, with both sides submitting plans by Monday. The Trump administration used the Alien Enemies Act to deport two plane loads of alleged gang members to a large prison in El Salvador, claiming a Venezuelan gang was invading the U.S. Boasberg had previously issued a temporary restraining order, but the deportations proceeded due to Justice Department attorneys argument that his oral instructions were flawed. Boasberg plans to hear from witnesses, including a Justice Department attorney fired in April for mistakenly deporting someone to El Salvador. A federal appeals court declined to reinstate Boasbergs original order but allowed him to continue his fact-finding inquiry. The ACLU stated that the deported individuals are still recovering from the trauma, while Justice Department attorneys argued that since the Venezuelans are now free in their home country, their claims have been undermined. An ACLU attorney countered that most of the deported Venezuelans want to return to the U.S. to pursue their legal cases, arguing that the Alien Enemies Act designation denied these men due process and they should be allowed to challenge their removal and their classification as gang members.
