Supreme Court Pauses Texas Redistricting Plan
The United States Supreme Court has temporarily halted a lower court decision regarding Texass congressional redistricting plan for 2026, which was supported by former President Donald Trump and favored Republicans. The plan was found to likely discriminate based on race. The Supreme Courts conservative majority will decide if the new map can be used in the upcoming midterm elections. The new map, designed to give Republicans five more House seats, was challenged by civil rights groups on behalf of Black and Hispanic voters. If the ruling stands, Texas might have to use the map drawn in 2021. Other states like Missouri and North Carolina have also redrawn maps to add Republican seats, while California voters approved a measure to add five Democratic seats. These redrawn maps are now facing legal challenges in several states, and the Supreme Court is also looking at a separate case from Louisiana that could impact how race-based districts are handled under the Voting Rights Act.
