Students Demand Action After Campus Shooting | Durham News

Two NC Central University students are recovering after a drive-by shooting near campus, sparking urgent calls from students for stronger safety measures and community action. Frustrated by the lack of arrests and unclear communication, students directly addressed the Durham City Council, demanding proactive steps—especially ahead of the high-profile Eagle-Aggie Classic football game. While police are rolling out a new gun violence plan shaped by diverse stakeholders—including university input—the school initially withheld an emergency alert, prompting student outcry for clearer crisis communication. With city and campus officials now collaborating to boost security and involve students in crafting a youth-focused violence reduction strategy, the community is rallying for swift, tangible improvements to protect its future.
