Phil Klay Takes Helm at PEN America | Durham News

Phil Klay, the acclaimed war veteran and National Book Award winner, is stepping into the spotlight as PEN America’s new president — a role that comes at a pivotal moment for the literary watchdog amid fierce debates over free expression and the Israel-Hamas conflict. Known for his firsthand experience in war zones and outspoken critiques of U.S. support for Israel’s military actions, Klay brings both empathy and urgency to the helm. His leadership promises to balance cultural exchange with accountability, aiming to restore trust and foster open dialogue in an organization currently grappling with internal divisions and canceled events. With co-CEOs now steering the ship after a turbulent past, Klay’s arrival signals a potential turning point for PEN’s future direction.
