Judge Rules Trump Admin Violating Immigrants' Rights
On November 14th, a federal judge in Los Angeles ruled that the Trump administration is violating immigrants constitutional rights by restricting their access to attorneys at a detention facility. The judge ordered the government to fix the situation, following a temporary order in July that required free, confidential phone calls with lawyers. Immigrant advocacy groups filed the lawsuit, alleging systematic targeting of brown-skinned individuals. The government has not fully complied with the July order, with lawyers facing difficulties meeting with clients and facility closures due to protests. The court mandated that the detention facility be open for attorney visits seven days a week, with notifications for closures. Mark Rosenbaum, an attorney with Public Counsel, stated that this preliminary injunction clarifies that the government cannot detain people and cut them off from their legal representation.
