Federal Cap Threatens University Research Funding
On November twelfth, a pivotal legal battle unfolds, potentially reshaping the landscape of research institutions like Duke University. The case revolves around a Trump-era policy that could drastically slash the funds universities receive from the National Institutes of Health for research overhead costs. The First Circuit Court of Appeals recently heard arguments in a case that will determine the fate of this federal cap. If implemented, the policy would cap reimbursement rates at fifteen percent, a stark decrease from Dukes current sixty-one point five percent. These funds, known as Facilities and Administration or F&A costs, cover essential administrative expenses and facility upkeep. Without these reimbursements, universities face a significant financial challenge in supporting their research endeavors. Duke, which has publicly condemned the proposed cap, has begun implementing cost-cutting measures, including a hiring freeze and layoffs, to ensure its long-term financial health. The university is closely watching the courts decision, as the outcome could either uphold this major financial threat to academic research or finally strike it down. DNN | The Daily News Now!
