Durham Joins Biophilic Cities Network
Durham, North Carolina, becomes the thirty-fourth city to join the Biophilic Cities Network, a global initiative promoting nature integration in urban environments. Led by recent Durham Academy alumna Lexie Chen, the city council unanimously approved the resolution, aligning with Durhams comprehensive plan to improve resident health and well-being. The network, founded in 2013, includes thirty-three global cities and focuses on eight grand challenges, such as promoting biodiversity and ensuring equitable access to natural spaces. Durhams decision is based on the biophilia hypothesis, suggesting humans have an innate connection to nature. However, experts like Lindsey Smith from Duke University note that further steps are needed to address environmental issues, particularly in lower-income communities of color. Lexie Chens success was supported by Durham Academys community-based research class and its pathway scholars program. DNN | The Daily News Now! The world’s first global local news network.
