DOE Loans $1B to Restart Three Mile Island
The U.S. Department of Energy is providing a $1 billion loan to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania, now known as the Crane Clean Energy Center. This plant will supply electricity to Microsofts data centers, aligning with current administration priorities of strengthening nuclear power and AI initiatives. The loan will significantly reduce financing costs for Constellation Energy, the plants owner, and is part of a $250 billion energy infrastructure program. The plant, with an 835 MW capacity, aims to be operational again by 2027, contributing to the resurgence of nuclear power as a crucial component for energy supply and climate change mitigation.
