Congresswoman Urges Army to Rethink ROTC Reclassification

Congresswoman Valerie Foushee is advocating for the United States Army to reconsider a plan that would reclassify the Bull City Battalion, a historic ROTC program at Duke University, as an extension unit under UNC-Chapel Hill. This change could disadvantage North Carolina Central University students due to increased travel distance for ROTC training. Foushee, in a letter to Brigadier General Maurice Barnett, expressed concerns that this reclassification could undermine the Armys efficiency goals and potentially lead to fewer students participating, higher dropout rates, and a smaller pool of future officers from diverse backgrounds. The Armys strategic rebalance plan also includes inactivating host units at Elizabeth City State University and Saint Augustines University and merging support with the closest existing unit for Duke, which is UNC-Chapel Hill. Foushee is urging the Cadet Command to either reconsider the reclassification or conduct a thorough review of its potential impact on officer production, diversity, recruiting, and cost efficiency.
