ACA Tax Credits Expiration Threatens Health Insurance Affordability
On November tenth, a legislative package aiming to end the longest government shutdown in US history is moving forward, but it leaves out a clear solution for expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits. These credits, which have made private health insurance more affordable for millions, are set to expire at the end of the year without further action from Congress. House Speaker Mike Johnson has not agreed to a matching vote in the House, making an extension seem unlikely. Some Democratic lawmakers have proposed temporary measures, but they havent gained support from Republican leaders. If the current package passes without other steps, these subsidies will disappear, potentially doubling average premiums for many Americans and increasing costs for hospitals and the government. Despite this, its still possible for Congress to act and reinstate the subsidies, but it might be too late for some who have already seen higher prices for next years health insurance.
