Rules 3 and 4 – The Second Week Rules for the Discernment of Spirits w/ Fr. Timothy Gallagher – Discerning Hearts Podcast

Episode 7 – Rules 3 and 4 – The Second Week Rules for the Discernment of Spirits: An Ignatian Guide to a Greater Discernment of Spirits with Fr. Timothy Gallagher In this episode of The Second Week Rules for the Discernment of Spirits, Fr. Timothy Gallagher continues his exploration of St. Ignatius of Loyola’s Third Rule, explaining why spiritual consolation accompanied by good and holy thoughts requires careful discernment. While consolation may bring joy, peace, and a sense of closeness to God, these experiences do not necessarily confirm that a particular course of action comes from the good spirit. Through the example of Barbara, a woman discerning her vocation while experiencing a growing desire to imitate Christ’s poverty, Fr. Gallagher illustrates how even generous and seemingly holy intentions must be examined over time. Rather than judging spiritual movements solely by the feelings they produce, Ignatius directs attention to how the accompanying thoughts develop throughout the discernment process, particularly with the guidance of a wise spiritual director. Fr. Gallagher then introduces the Fourth Rule, which reveals how the enemy can disguise himself as an angel of light, initially presenting thoughts that appear holy and align with a person's genuine desires to serve God. The enemy begins by encouraging what seems good but gradually attempts to redirect the soul toward choices that lead away from God's will. Drawing upon examples of individuals discerning service, vocation, and deeper prayer, Fr. Gallagher explains how these subtle movements unfold little by little, making patient attention essential. St. Ignatius offers a practical path toward recognizing such deception by observing the progression of thoughts and their eventual direction. This teaching invites greater spiritual awareness, trust in God's guidance, and confidence that careful discernment can help a person recognize and follow the path God truly desires. Third Rule The third: with cause both the good angel and the bad can console the soul, for contrary ends: the good angel for the profit of the soul, that it may grow and rise from good to better; and the bad angel for the contrary, and later on to draw it to his damnable intention and malice. (331) Fourth Rule The fourth: It is proper to the bad angel, who takes on the appearance of an angel of light, to enter with the devout soul and to go out with himself; that is, to bring good and holy thoughts, conformed to such a just soul, and afterwards, little by little, he endeavors to go out, bringing the soul to his hidden deceits and perverse intentions. (332) Through a series of compelling conference talks, Fr. Gallagher carefully breaks open St. Ignatius of Loyola's Second Week Rules for Greater Discernment. This set of 8 "rules" (or guidelines) helps us to discern whether a seemingly good, noble, holy idea or feeling, often understood as a "spiritual consolation," could be a working of the enemy intending to lead us astray. He shows how all of us can learn to listen to and follow God's gentle leading in our daily lives. For other episodes in this series visit: The Second Week Rules for the Discernment Spirits with Fr.
