Supra-Gingival Minimally Invasive Dentistry: A Healthier Approach to Esthetic Restorations

From Dentistry Made Simple Dentistry Made Simple

A supragingival minimally invasive approach to restorative dentistry, challenging the traditional reliance on subgingival margins and full crowns. Author Jose-Luis Ruiz argues that mechanical retention techniques often lead to unnecessary tooth destruction and periodontal inflammation. By utilizing modern adhesive materials, clinicians can keep restoration margins above the gum line, which preserves tooth structure and promotes better long-term oral health. The text further explains that while subgingival margins are frequently used for aesthetic or retentive purposes, they often cause bleeding, pulp injury, and difficult clinical procedures. Ultimately, the source serves as a guide for transitioning to biocompatible, partial-coverage restorations that are easier for the dentist and healthier for the patient. This shift in paradigm aims to replace outdated, aggressive drilling habits with predictable, adhesive-based protocols.
