Periodontitis and Systemic Diseases: Clinical Evidence and Biological Plausibility

Explores the intricate bidirectional relationship between periodontitis and major systemic diseases, focusing heavily on obesity and diabetes. The authors provide a comprehensive overview of clinical evidence and biological mechanisms, such as systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, that link oral infections to broader physical health. By detailing how periodontal therapy can improve glycaemic control (HbA1c levels), the text advocates for a more holistic approach to medicine that integrates dental and medical care. Furthermore, the source evaluates the hierarchy of evidence and uses the Bradford Hill criteria to distinguish between simple associations and true causality. Ultimately, the work aims to "put the mouth back inside the body" by highlighting how oral health serves as a critical indicator and influencer of chronic non-communicable diseases.
