Odontodes: The Developmental and Evolutionary Building Blocks of Dentitions

The research spans 500 million years of vertebrate history, utilizing advanced synchrotron scans and single-cell transcriptomics to trace how these structures evolved from early jawless fish to modern humans. Key focus areas include the neural crest origin of dental cells, the genetic signaling pathways that regulate periodic patterning, and the complex interactions between tooth and jaw growth. Contributors examine diverse species, such as sharks, rays, and elephants, to understand how specialized tissues like enameloid and cementum are produced. Finally, the text addresses human dental variation, discussing how genetic and environmental factors influence the evolution of the dental arch.
